Sand Craft
Materials:
* large sheet of
white paper or paper plate
* 1 cup (250 mL) of white sugar.
* colored chalk
* clear glass or plastic container with a lid (example: baby food jar)
* small piece of fabric
* glue
* ribbon or elastic
* egg carton (optional)
Instructions:
1. Take the sheet of paper or
paper plate and lay it flat in front of you.
2. Pour about 1 tablespoon
(15 mL) of sugar onto the paper.
3. Take any color of chalk and start to rub it onto the sugar. You
must PRESS DOWN HARD and starting at the edge of the sugar pile and
working inwards works best.
4. When the sugar has become
the color you want, carefully pick up the paper at two opposite ends
and fold it in half. Then, pour the sugar carefully into the jar.
5. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 with other colors.
(While coloring the sugar, you may wish to separate the colors by
placing them in the different
compartments of an egg carton.)
6. When the jar is filled to the top, put the palm of your hand onto
the top of the jar and press down. Te sugar must be compressed tightly
into the jar.
7. Put more sugar in the jar until it is filled to the very top and
can't be pressed down any more. Just like Miss Crachet said, "You
don't want air pockets".
8. Take the lid and run a bead of glue around the inside edge of the
lid.
9. Screw the lid onto the jar. It will seal shut.
10. Cut the fabric into a circle a bit larger than the lid.
11. Place the fabric on the lid and fasten an elastic or ribbon around
the lid to hold the fabric in place.
12. You can make a little tag that reads - "How precious to me
are your thoughts O God! . . . They out number the grains of sand"
Psalm 139: 17,18.
13. Now you have a beautiful gift jar of colored sand.
